The Independent National Electoral Commission has finally approved the merger of three political parties into the All Progressives Congress. The Action Congress of Nigeria, (ACN), All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), and the Congress for Progressive Change, (CPC), are the three individual parties that have been given an all clear signal to merge into one, (APC).
As a result of this, INEC says, the certificates of the different parties will be withdrawn, meaning that only one certificate shall be issued to them, which would of course carry the new name of the party.
The electoral body issued a statement saying, “The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has approved the application by three political parties – the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) – to merge into one, to be known as the All Progressives Congress. On considering the application, the Commission found that the applicant-parties have met all statutory requirements for the merger, and has accordingly granted their request.” The statement went further to add; “consequently, the Commission has approved the withdrawal of the individual certificates of the applicant-parties, and the issuance of a single certificate to the All Progressives Congress.”
APC will be largest opposition party to the ruling PDP. Many people who are tired of PDP are happy about the Merger. The new party has the main objective to defeating the PDP in the next general election in Nigeria, which is scheduled for 2015. The new party (APC) has promised not to disappoint the enthusiasm of Nigerians for a change.
